Manifesta 16 Ruhr: Das ist keine Kirche

Since its first edition in 1996, Manifesta has moved to a new European city or region every two years. This year's edition of the nomadic biennial will take place in four cities in the Ruhr Area: Duisburg, Essen, Gelsenkirchen and Bochum. Beyond contemporary art, Manifesta addresses architecture, education, ecology, societal issues and the local community. Each edition explores urgent social and political topics in Europe, drawing on the unique context of its host city or region. In doing so, local challenges are linked to broader regional concerns. Against this backdrop, Manifesta 16 Ruhr addresses the issue of repurposing vacant or deconsecrated church buildings-a pressing problem in the Ruhr Area and throughout Europe. The goal is to transform the twelve church buildings serving as venues into accessible, non-commercial spaces. Through art, performance, sound, sports, community kitchens and architectural interventions, spaces and moments are created that impact the surrounding neighborhoods, shaping the buildings' social role beyond the biennial. This publication presents all twelve venues, documents the interventions and situates the locations and projects within their historical, transformative and urban contexts.; Seit ihrer ersten Ausgabe im Jahr 1996 zieht die Manifesta alle zwei Jahre in eine neue europäische Stadt oder Region. Die diesjährige Ausgabe der nomadischen Biennale findet in gleich vier Städten im Ruhrgebiet statt: Duisburg, Essen, Gelsenkirchen und Bochum. Neben zeitgenössischer Kunst befasst sich die Manifesta mit Architektur, Bildung, Ökologie, sozialen Themen und der Gemeinschaft vor Ort. Jede Ausgabe greift drängende gesellschaftliche und politische Fragen Europas auf, ausgehend vom spezifischen Kontext der jeweiligen Gaststadt oder -region. Dabei werden lokale Herausforderungen mit überregionalen Anliegen verbunden. Vor diesem Hintergrund widmet sich die Manifesta 16 Ruhr der Frage der Umnutzung leerstehender oder entweihter Kirchengebäude - ein drängendes Problem nicht nur im Ruhrgebiet, sondern in ganz Europa. Ziel ist es, die insgesamt zwölf Kirchengebäude, die als Veranstaltungsorte dienen, in barrierefreie, nichtkommerzielle Orte umzuwandeln. Durch Kunst, Performance, Sound, aber auch Sport, Gemeinschaftsküchen oder architektonische Interventionen entstehen Räume und Momente, die weit in die umliegenden Stadtviertel hineinwirken und so die soziale Rolle der Gebäude über die Biennale hinaus prägen. Die Publikation stellt alle zwölf Veranstaltungsorte vor, dokumentiert die Interventionen und bettet die Orte und Projekte in ihren historischen, transformativen und urbanistischen Kontext ein.
