- As a trans person, S. Bear Bergman chooses to use the pronouns 'ze' and 'hir.'
- Bear has a strong fan base as a result of hir popular lectures and spoken-word engagements at colleges, universities and theaters across North America, and hir first two books, both available from Arsenal: Butch is a Noun and The Nearest Exit May Behind You. Bear also co-edited the award-winning anthology Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation (Seal) with the great Kate Bornstein in 2010.

- This book is in large part inspired by Bear's experiences as one of two trans parents of a son (born in 2009) and the evolving concept of family, both from within (the trans community and their supporters, both LGB and straight) and without (conservatives and others opposed to traditional models of marriage and family).
