Jazz-Rock Guitar Improvisation: Modal Systems, Modern Chords, and Musical Freedom Book with Online Video by Alex Skolnick & Dave Rubin Guitar Improvisation, Modal Harmony and Modern Chord Concepts

(Guitar Educational). If you've ever felt limited by pentatonics, predictable licks, or rigid scale patterns, Jazz-Rock Guitar Improvisation offers a way forward. Alex Skolnick and Dave Rubin guide you through the harmonic concepts that shape modern improvisation, including modal harmony, melodic minor modes, altered and diminished sounds, chromatic approaches, and outside patterns. Rather than presenting theory as an academic exercise, each idea is tied directly to practical guitar shapes and musical applications. The goal is not to sound 'more jazzy,' but to gain greater control over tension, color, and resolution, allowing you to move freely between rock, jazz, fusion, and beyond. Whether you're improvising over a vamp, navigating complex progressions, or composing your own lines, this book provides a clear path toward a deeper, more expressive improvisational voice. Each chapter is supported by companion videos featuring Alex Skolnick performing every musical figure. These concise demonstrations clarify phrasing, feel, and musical intent, reinforcing the written material and helping the concepts click quickly and naturally.
