Although 1 Enoch is attested in fragmentary form in Aramaic texts from the Second Temple period and in Greek witnesses from Late Antiquity (alongside smaller fragments in Latin, Syriac, and Coptic), it is preserved most fully in the Geez (Ethiopic) manuscript tradition, represented by manuscripts dating from the fourteenth to the twentieth century. This book offers a concise yet significant account of recent advances in the study of an expanding corpus of Ethiopic manuscripts-research that is reshaping the textual history of 1 Enoch, bringing to light substantial 'new' material, and paving the way for a new critical edition and fresh translations into modern languages.

Taking this renewed text-critical work as its point of departure, the volume moves beyond questions of transmission to lay the groundwork for a serious engagement with the reception and interpretation of 1 Enoch among Christian and Jewish communities in the Global South. It highlights several ways in which this living tradition continues to make distinctive theological contributions that resonate with contemporary concerns. Long excluded from Western biblical translations since its introduction to the western world in the 18th century, 1 Enoch is here shown to warrant special attention. This book argues that there are compelling textual, historical, and theological reasons for its inclusion in present-day ecumenical discourse.
