Klavierkonzert Nr. 2 g-moll op. 22

Given Saint-Saëns' talents both as pianist and composer, it stood to reason that he would engage with the piano concerto genre early on. But he gave a clear renunciation of the 'concerto brilliant' that was dominant in France at that time, declaring instead that 'the solo part of a concerto must be set out, and treated, like a dramatic role'. He realised this concept of a 'symphonic concerto' in this second piano concerto, composed in 1868. The solo part is technically very challenging, and at the same time closely bound up with the orchestra. Johannes Umbreit is responsible for the piano reduction, based on the composer's own version for two pianos; Pascal Rogé supplies the fingerings for the solo part.; En tant que pianiste et compositeur, Saint-Saëns se trouva tout naturellement confronté de bonne heure au genre du concerto pour piano. La partie de soliste est techniquement très difficile tout en se fondant étroitement à la pâte orchestrale. La réduction pour piano est de Johannes Umbreit. Elle repose sur la version pour deux pianos réalisée par le compositeur lui-même. Dem damals in Frankreich vorherrschenden Typus des 'Concerto brillant' erteilte er eine klare Absage: 'Das Solo eines Konzerts muss wie eine dramatische Rolle angelegt und behandelt werden'. Dieses Konzept des 'symphonischen Konzerts' lässt sich sehr gut bei seinem 1868 entstandenen 2. Klavierkonzert nachvollziehen. Der Solopart ist technisch sehr anspruchsvoll und gleichzeitig dicht mit dem Orchester verbunden. Für den Klavierauszug - auf der Basis der vom Komponisten selbst stammenden Fassung für zwei Klaviere - zeichnet Johannes Umbreit verantwortlich, für den Fingersatz der Solopartie Pascal Rogé.
