Erste Arbeiten gehen bis ins Jahr 1892 zurück, doch im Sommer 1896, nachdem Skrjabin die Sonate bereits mehrfach in Paris öffentlich aufgeführt hatte, berichtete er dem befreundeten Verleger und Mäzen Beljajew entmutigt: 'Die Sonate habe ich zwar vollendet, aber bin damit völlig unzufrieden, obwohl sie siebenmal umgearbeitet wurde.' Erst 1898 war der Komponist zufrieden, und das Werk erschien im Druck.
